Towa Tei
Funkin' For Jamaica (Vinyl Two)

Listening notes

Towa Tei's "Funkin' For Jamaica (Vinyl Two)" was released in 2001 on EastWest Records GmbH under catalog number 8573-89150-0. A single-format vinyl release, it sits across the genres of breakbeat, electronic, and house, positioning it within the broader landscape of early 2000s club-oriented output.

The record carries four tracks spread across two sides. The A-side opens with the "Tumbline Dice Mix" of "Funkin' For Jamaica," running at five minutes and thirteen seconds, followed by a lengthier instrumental club mix credited to Boris Dlugosch and Michi Lange, which extends to seven minutes and twenty-six seconds. The presence of two named mixers on a single side reflects the remix-centered format common to vinyl singles of the period, where extended club treatments were a practical consideration for DJ use.

The B-side takes a slightly different shape. "Butterfly" appears in an EP version at three minutes and forty-two seconds, offering a distinct track rather than another remix of the title song. The side closes with the original album version of "Funkin' For Jamaica," clocking in at four minutes and fifty-five seconds, which provides a reference point against the remixed versions presented elsewhere on the record.

As the designation "Vinyl Two" in the title suggests, this release was likely issued alongside at least one companion vinyl, a common release strategy for singles during this era intended to distribute different mixes and versions across multiple physical formats.
