Retro Arena Vinyl Four

Listening notes

Released in 2001 on Lightning Records, Retro Arena Vinyl Four is a various artists compilation issued under catalog number LR-2001-016. The record presents four tracks across two sides, drawing from the electronic, progressive house, and progressive trance genres that circulated through club culture at the time.

Side A opens with "Hablando (Acordeon Mix)," running six minutes and forty seconds, followed by "Stop The Disease (Original Mix)" at three minutes and fifty-one seconds. The shorter runtime of the second track creates an asymmetry within the side that sets it apart from the longer form structures common to the genres represented here.

Side B carries the greater portion of the runtime. "Perfect Motion (Boys Own Mix)" occupies nine minutes and forty-two seconds, making it the longest track on the release and the centerpiece of the second side. "Now! (Play Mix)" closes the record at four minutes and thirty-nine seconds. The presence of named mixes throughout the tracklist — the Acordeon Mix, the Boys Own Mix, and the Play Mix — indicates that at least some of these tracks existed in alternate versions, though the relationships between those versions are not documented here.

The release fits within a broader early 2000s pattern of vinyl compilations aimed at DJ and club markets, where progressive house and progressive trance releases were frequently packaged in multi-track formats suited to mixing. The Retro Arena series title suggests this was part of a numbered sequence from Lightning Records, with LR-2001-016 indicating its placement within the label's catalog output for that year.
