Rainbow
Finyl Vinyl

Listening notes

Rainbow's *Finyl Vinyl*, released on Polydor in 1986 under catalog number 38MM 0490/1, is a double-album live compilation spanning four sides of vinyl. Classified under hard rock and rock, the release collects fourteen tracks drawn from the band's catalog, running a considerable total playing time that makes use of the double-LP format's capacity.

The track sequencing gives some sense of the set's scope. Side A opens with "Spotlight Kid" at five minutes and moves through "I Surrender" at five minutes and forty-five seconds before closing with the shorter "Miss Mistreated" at three minutes and twenty-one seconds. Side B carries five tracks, ranging from the three-minute-ten "Jealous Lover" to the extended "Tearin' Out My Heart," which runs eight minutes and four seconds. "Since You Been Gone" and "Bad Girl" close out the side at three minutes forty seconds and four minutes forty-eight seconds respectively.

The third side is anchored by "Difficult To Cure," the longest entry on the record at eleven minutes and fifteen seconds, followed by "Stone Cold" and "Power." Side D brings the release to a close with three tracks: "Man On The Silver Mountain" at eight minutes and twenty seconds, "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" at seven minutes and twelve seconds, and "Weiss Heim" at five minutes and ten seconds. The final two tracks on Side D, alongside "Difficult To Cure" and "Tearin' Out My Heart," account for a significant share of the record's overall runtime, giving the second half of the release a noticeably more expansive character than the first.

*Finyl Vinyl* appeared the same year Rainbow dissolved, and its title plays on that finality in straightforward terms. As a vinyl artifact issued by Polydor, it represents one documented endpoint in the band's recorded output.
