Rainbow
Finyl Vinyl

Listening notes

Released in 1986 on Polydor (catalog number 827 987-1), Finyl Vinyl is a vinyl compilation from Rainbow spanning the hard rock and rock genres. The release is presented as a double album across four sides, accommodating fourteen tracks with a combined runtime that extends well into multiple hours of material.

The tracklist draws from what the title's punning wordplay suggests is a career-spanning selection. Side A opens with "Spotlight Kid" at five minutes, followed by "I Surrender" at five minutes and forty-five seconds, and "Miss Mistreated" at three minutes and twenty-one seconds. Side B carries five tracks, notably including "Tearin' Out My Heart," which runs eight minutes and four seconds and stands as the longest entry on that side. Familiar titles such as "Since You Been Gone" and "Bad Girl" also appear here.

Side C is anchored by "Difficult To Cure," clocking in at eleven minutes and fifteen seconds, making it the single longest track on the release. "Stone Cold" and "Power" follow to close the side. Side D brings the compilation to a close with "Man On The Silver Mountain" at eight minutes and twenty seconds, "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" at seven minutes and twelve seconds, and "Weiss Heim" at five minutes and ten seconds.

The four-sided vinyl format allows for a generous total running time, with several tracks given extended durations that would have been difficult to accommodate on a single or double album of standard length. The release was issued through Polydor, a label with broad international distribution during the period.
