Neutral Milk Hotel
NMH Vinyl Box Set

Listening notes

Released in 2014 on NMH Records under catalog number NMH001, the NMH Vinyl Box Set collects the recorded catalog of Neutral Milk Hotel across four vinyl records and accompanying single-sided or split discs, spanning genres the band worked within: folk rock, indie rock, psychedelic rock, and rock.

The set organizes its contents by release. The first two records present In the Aeroplane Over the Sea across sides A and B, running through the album's full sequence from "The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. One" at two minutes through the closing "Two-Headed Boy Pt. Two" at five minutes and eighteen seconds, with "Oh Comely" occupying eight minutes and seventeen seconds on side B. Sides C and D carry On Avery Island, which opens with "Song Against Sex" and closes with "Pree-Sisters Swallowing a Donkey's Eye."

Sides E and F present the Ferris Wheel on Fire EP across twelve tracks, followed by sides G and H containing Everything Is, a release whose eight tracks include "Here We Are (For W. Cullen Hart)" and the five-minute closing piece "Aunt Eggma Blow Torch."

Beyond the standard album and EP material, the box set includes several additional records. Sides I and J present two unfinished versions of "Little Birds," running six minutes two seconds and four minutes thirty-six seconds respectively. A further record pairs alternate versions of "You've Passed" and "Where You'll Find Me Now," each running noticeably longer than their On Avery Island counterparts. A final record pairs "Holland, 1945" with "Engine."

The set is cataloged as NMH001, indicating it was the first release on the band's own NMH Records imprint.
