Listening notes

Released in 2014 on The End Records (catalog number TE355-1), "Lashes To Ashes, Lust To Dust: A Vinyl Retrospective '96-'03" is a box set from Finnish gothic metal act HIM, cataloged under the genres of Gothic Metal and Rock. The set spans multiple formats simultaneously, combining five vinyl records with a memory stick, making it an all-media package in the strict sense of that designation.

The vinyl portion of the set covers four of the band's studio albums in sequence: "Greatest Lovesongs, Vol. 666," "Razorblade Romance," "Deep Shadows And Brilliant Highlights," and "Love Metal," preceded by the "666 Ways to Love: Prologue" EP across the first two sides. The albums are distributed across sides A through J, with each original album occupying a dedicated pair of sides. Durations are listed only for the four tracks on the prologue EP: "Stigmata Diaboli" at 2:51, "Wicked Game" at 3:53, "Dark Sekret Love" at 5:17, and "The Heartless" at 7:25.

The memory stick, labeled USB Drive L2AL2D, carries a substantially larger program of 79 tracks. These include digital counterparts to all four studio albums and the prologue EP, augmented by bonus material organized under each album heading. Bonus content includes tracks identified as Strongroom Sessions, Hollola Tapes, Vinnfox Relics, ACSTC recordings, PRCX and TRNSFRMTN versions, a John Fryer mix, a Kevin Shirley mix, and live recordings drawn from venues and events spanning 1999 through 2014. Among the identified live dates are performances at Provinssirock (1999), Caribia in Turku (2002), Semifinal Helsinki (2003), Rockpalast, Helldone, El Teatro Flores in Buenos Aires, and Center Stage in Georgia, all listed by year using Roman numerals. The USB tracks for the prologue EP carry slightly longer durations than their vinyl counterparts: "Stigmata Diaboli" at 2:56, "Wicked Game" at 3:57, "Dark Sekret Love" at 5:20, and "The Heartless" at 7:27.

This draft has not been fact-checked and should be verified against primary sources before publication.
