Listening notes
Released in 2019 on Rhino Records (catalog number R1 591001), The Vinyl Collection 1970–1978 is a Black Sabbath box set spanning the band's output across eight studio albums recorded between 1970 and 1978. The set is formatted as a multi-vinyl box and covers the period from the self-titled debut through Never Say Die!, taking in Paranoid, Master of Reality, Vol. 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, and Technical Ecstasy along the way.
The albums are sequenced chronologically across sides A through P, with each record devoted to a single album. Sides Q and R collect a bonus disc titled Monomania: The Mono Singles 1970–1976, which gathers single versions and edits not always found on the studio albums themselves. These include an edited "Iron Man" at 3:41 against the album version's 5:54, a 2:38 edit of "Into The Void," and a one-minute radio spot featuring excerpts of "Black Sabbath" and "The Wizard." A separate 7-inch single — sides S and T — reproduces the 1970 "Evil Woman" single, pairing the title track with "Wicked World."
The genres listed for the collection are Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Rock, reflecting the range of material across the eight albums. The tracklist runs to more than eighty individual titles when bonus material is included, making the set a substantial document of the Ozzy Osbourne-era discography on Rhino's imprint.
No information about pressing specifications, mastering, or production credits has been verified for this entry and should be researched before publication.
