Listening notes
Billy Joel's The Vinyl Collection, Vol. 2, released by Columbia in 2023 under catalog number 19439957181, is an eight-LP box set gathering seven studio albums alongside one live record. The studio titles represented are Glass Houses, The Nylon Curtain, An Innocent Man, The Bridge, Storm Front, River Of Dreams, and Fantasies & Delusions. The live component, Live From Long Island, occupies the final records in the set, running from side Q through side V.
The tracklist spans a notably wide range of genres, with the set cataloged under Classical, Pop, Pop Rock, and Rock — a breadth reflected in the material itself. The first six studio albums cover the rock and pop sides of Joel's output, while Fantasies & Delusions, spread across sides M through P, consists entirely of solo piano pieces with titles such as Reverie ('Villa D'Este'), Invention In C Minor, and the three-movement Suite For Piano ('Star-Crossed'), accounting for the Classical designation.
The live album, occupying sides Q through V, presents a substantial program including Piano Man, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, The Stranger, Goodnight Saigon, and Movin' Out (Anthony's Song), among others. Several songs appear more than once across the box set in both studio and live versions — You May Be Right, Allentown, Don't Ask Me Why, Scandinavian Skies, Pressure, and Sometimes A Fantasy are each represented twice.
With sides running from A through V, the set amounts to a wide-ranging survey of Joel's recorded work from 1980 through 2001. This is an unreviewed draft intended for human fact-checking prior to publication.
