Traktor Scratch Control Vinyl Black

Listening notes

Released in 2008 on Native Instruments' own imprint, the Traktor Scratch Control Vinyl Black (catalog number NI-TS 001) occupies an unusual position in any vinyl catalog: it is a functional object first and a record second. Classified under the genres of Non-Music and Technical, it makes no claim to being a listening experience, and the tracklist confirms as much.

Both sides of the disc open with a Lead-In section before moving through a series of segments labeled Playback Zone, which account for the substantial majority of the groove space on each side. The A-side carries ten Playback Zone segments followed by two Scroll Zones, while the B-side extends to fifteen Playback Zone segments and closes with two Scroll Zones. No track durations are listed anywhere in the official data.

The structured, repeated segmentation of the groove — rather than the continuous uninterrupted cut of a conventional record — points clearly to the disc's purpose as a timecode control medium designed for use with Traktor DJ software. The physical disc communicates positional and directional information to the software rather than delivering audio content intended for an audience.

For a reference site organized around vinyl as a format, this release raises questions worth sitting with. The record is pressed in black vinyl, it carries a catalog number, it was released in a specific year, and its groove structure is deliberately and precisely organized. By those measures it qualifies as a catalogable release. What it does not carry is music, an artist, or any conventional creative content — a fact its own genre classifications state plainly.

It is a tool that happens to be a record, and the distinction matters.
