George Harrison
The Vinyl Collection: Wonderwall Music

Listening notes

George Harrison's Wonderwall Music appeared in 2017 as part of Dark Horse Records' Vinyl Collection series, issued on CD. The album serves as the soundtrack to the 1968 film Wonderwall and carries genre classifications spanning avantgarde, experimental, folk, world and country, psychedelic rock, rock, and stage and screen categories — a spread that gives some indication of how varied the material across its nineteen tracks actually is.

Running from "Microbes" at three minutes and forty-four seconds through to the closing "Singing Om" at one minute and fifty-seven seconds, the record covers considerable stylistic ground in a relatively compact total runtime. Several tracks are brief sketches — "Tabla And Pakavaj" at one minute and five seconds, "Glass Box" at one minute and seven seconds, "Guru Vandana" at one minute and eight seconds — while others extend further, with "Dream Scene" at five minutes and twenty-seven seconds representing the longest piece on the release. "In The Park," "Party Seacombe," and "Love Scene" each run past the four-minute mark, providing moments of relative length amid the surrounding shorter cues.

The tracklist itself signals the soundtrack's function: titles such as "Cowboy Music," "Drilling A Home," "On The Bed," and "Crying" read as descriptive cues tied to specific scenes rather than standalone compositions in the conventional sense. Others, including "Gat Kirwani" and "Tabla And Pakavaj," point toward Indian classical instrumentation, consistent with the album's genre classifications.
